Springfield, Vermont, has won the honor of being known as the hometown of TV’s fictional Simpsons family and will get to host premiere of The Simpsons Movie.
The Vermont town was one of the 14 Springfield cities across the United States that participated in the contest by submitted a 3-5 minute video demonstrating their “Simpsons spirit.” The videos were then posted online for people to vote on.
Vermont’s submission, which won with 15,367 votes, featured Homer running through the streets of the town chasing a huge, rolling pink doughnut, wrecking havoc wherever he goes. Eventually, an angry mob chases him to a movie theater where The Simpsons Movie is about to start.
The winning town, home to 9,300 residents, will host the movie’s premiere on July 21, 2007, where the filmmakers will walk the yellow carpet.
The 13 other Springfields will be given small screenings of their own the night before the movie hits theaters nationwide on July 27, 2007.
I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont video. After we helped them win, our local Chamber of Commerce turned its back on us. We were kept off the invitation list, our seats awarded to the elite in town instead. And not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater.
