There’s only one reason to buy House, M.D. – Season Three
on DVD — it’s one of the finest shows on television right now.
The show centers around Dr. Gregory House, played wonderfully by Hugh Laurie, a brilliant infectious disease specialist with a not-so-great bedside manner. Dr. House, who leads a team of young doctors at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, typically uses unconventional methods to solve the most allusive of medical mysteries.
Watching Season Three, which included guest appearances by Kathleen Quinlan, Joel Grey, John Larroquette, Charles S. Dutton, and Dave Matthews, left me wanting Season Four to start right away. It is an emotional rollercoaster for the characters and the audience. All of the storylines are interesting and fantastically written. Hugh Laurie is phenomenal as Dr. House. The supporting cast — Lisa Edelstein, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Omar Epps, and Jesse Spencer — has made me cry at some point in every episode. House deserves every Emmy and Golden Globe nomination and win.
Season 3 — which consists of 24 episodes — is entertaining enough, so ho-hum to downright annoying special features aren’t a selling point for this 5-disc DVD collection. There isn’t much in the way of extras, though probably more than most TV show DVDs offer. There are alternative takes, a commentary track, blooper reel, a deeper look at one of the episodes, how props work, a music video, and a look into the production office.
The first disc has an alternative take and is the most interesting of the extras. I have never heard so many swear words bleeped out of a scene that lasts less than two minutes. Dr. Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) and Dr. Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) get into a discussion which escalates into a heated exchange. The f-word starts flying like pigeons. It’s amusing and it’s the only amusing extra.
The blooper reel is what I look forward to most. I expect to laugh at the petty misfortunes of the cast and if I’m really lucky, the crew too. The blooper reel, which isn’t very long, is dreadfully boring. There aren’t any laughs, no huge mistakes, nothing. I did not laugh at all. No one in the room laughs when an actor misses his line, so it’s just a missed line. It was just bad takes and cutting room garbage.
Executive Producer Katie Jacobs is in several of the extras. I find her less than pleasant to listen to and even worse to watch. She comes across to me as a big phony, acting sweet for the camera but as soon as it is off she is screaming at the staff. She bounds around the office and calls everyone wonderful or tells them that they are the reason for the show when everyone knows she thinks she is the reason for the show. The extras would be better if they just took her out.
I love House M.D. and any fan of the show should buy the collection. Don’t buy it for the extras, but buy it for the substance, the wonderful writing, and outstanding acting!
Easily one of the best shows on television and I especially loved Season 3. To me, the show keeps getting better and better
