Winona Ryder has joined the cast of JJ Abrams‘s Star Trek XI, according to Variety.
Ryder will play Amanda Grayson, Spock’s human mother in the Star Trek prequel, which hits theaters Christmas Day 2008. The young version of the half-human/half-Vulcan Spock will be played by Heroes star Zachary Quinto, while Leonard Nimoy will also appear as an older Spock, reprising his role from the classic TV show and feature films.
The Paramount Pictures film, which was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, revolves around a young James T. Kirk “” the role originated by William Shatner, which will now be played by Chris Pine “” and his future USS Enterprise crew members during their early days at Starfleet Academy.
Confirmed casting for Kirk’s future Enterprise crew includes Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu.
Also confirmed is a new villain, Nero, to be played by Eric Bana.
Star Trek.com reports that 51-year-old Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood has been cast as Captain Christopher Pike, Kirk’s Enterprise predecessor who appeared in the TV show’s first pilot “The Cage” as well as in the two-part episode “The Menagerie.”
P2 star Rachel Nichols told the Toronto Sun that she has been cast in Star Trek XI, though no word yet which character she’ll play.

Winona will be interesting to watch in this role. I really do hope this movie turns out to be good.
