Frasier Season 10 DVDFrasier
The Tenth Season
Starring Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin, Jane Leeves, and John Mahoney
Available December 11, 2007
Paramount Home Video

Late night reruns are never enough. A small dose of Frasier and Niles along with Daphne, Martin, and Roz always lifts the spirit and makes you feel a little bit better about being the nerd you always knew you were … ahem … are. With the release of Season 10 of Frasier, witty banter and intelligent humor welcome Frasier enthusiasts back to their little piece of TV home. We fans have been waiting forever for this season to be released and it was not fair that Season 11 beat 10 to the shelves, or more correctly, to Amazon so we could pre-order.

The complete season 10 compilation, which includes all 24 episodes on 4 discs, aims to please. Unlike Seasons 5 and 6, which tried harder to leave the audience interested and humored, Season 10 does so naturally. The writers and directors have returned to what always made Frasier remarkable — its characters.

In this season we finally see Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) wed in THE RING CYCLE. One may ask how many times a couple can get married, but, like the 10 years of love tension between Niles and Daphne, it is only natural that they make it down the aisle not once or twice, but dare I say it a la Frasier — thrice.

Superhero Cinema 2008

WordSlinger   |

WordSlinger's Superhero Cinema 2008If 2007 was the year of the sequel, 2008 is the year of the superhero movie. With the obvious money to be made in the genre, production companies are buying up and churning out as many big-screen adaptations as they can, some with skill and respect for the source material, some with hasty disregard for anything than can be remotely described as quality. There have been some phenoms (Spider-Man) and some stinkers (Catwoman), but there’s no shortage in new material. Here’s my best attempt at a rundown of what you can expect to see (or avoid) in 2008, bypassing the fanboy BS and campy (Marvel vs. DC) loyalties.

Weekly Comic Book PullsGreen Lantern #25
I loved the beginning of this crossover, I loved the middle, so why should my opinion change about the end? I loved this issue, from the opening battle scene, to the explanation of the 7 Lantern Corps, to the preview of the next big GL event. I’ll admit that it’s kind of cheesy, but darn it if Geoff Johns doesn’t find a way to make it interesting. So many great moments in the issue, with the denizens of Coast City playing their part in defeating Sinestro, to Cyborg Superman’s not quite death, every page gave me another great moment. Ivan Reis brought his A-game for this issue, and the time spent shows. I have to go back and re-read it to see which pages were drawn by Reis and which ones were done by Ethan Van Sciver, but there was so much done well about the art I didn’t really notice. I’m calling the Sinestro Corp War a success, and it’s certainly in the running for some of the best comics of the year. —5 out of 5

PULL LIST 12-12-07

  • Green Lantern #25
  • Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Presents: Ion
  • New Avengers #37
  • New Warriors #6
  • Booster Gold #5
  • Pirates of Coney Island #6
  • Ultimate Iron Man II #1

Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Presents: Ion
Not as good as GL #25, in fact I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone but completists of the Sinestro Corp story. Basically Kyle Raynor hangs out with the new Ion and shows him the ropes a bit, they fight one of Kyle’s former enemies, and we learn who Kyle will be partnered with. It’s fairly light on story or information, and the art is fairly meh. It’s not awful, but it’s just throw-away. —2 out of 5
