Before going to see any film adaptation, I love to read the book on which its based. And for projects aimed at children, I’m a proponent of having kids read the book before seeing the movie, as well. That’s why I think the “Read It Before You See It” global digital campaign for C. S. Lewis‘ The Chronicles of Narnia is such a great idea.
HarperCollins Children’s Books launched the massive web campaign today with a Narnia microsite, which will focus attention on the seven books in the series as a lead-in to the Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media release of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian film on May 16, 2008.
Extensive promotions on Facebook and MySpace, a custom Prince Caspian widget (which you can see here below), and “Enter to Win” consumer contests are among the Web 2.0 initiatives that will reach new and existing fans of Narnia in surprising interactive ways, presenting an enhanced look at the beloved world that is Narnia.
In The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Movie Tie-in Edition readers can experience Narnia in a collectible edition featuring an 8-page, fold-out insert based on C. S. Lewis’s own timeline conceived for Narnia. This special full-color timeline, recreated from C. S. Lewis’s original and paired with Pauline Baynes’ classic full-color illustrations for the first time, provides the key to the passage of time in Narnia and Earth by laying the two worlds side by side. Never before has C. S. Lewis’s timeline been included in a complete edition of all seven books of Narnia.
In April 2008, Narnia Chronology: From the Archives of the Last King, an interactive version of The Chronicles of Narnia will be released. The Chronology will include pop-ups, gatefolds, pull tabs and many other exciting features to tell the stories in a sweeping linear format as C. S. Lewis imagined it.
That’s a cool idea to encourage kids to read the series. I finished reading all of them about a year and a half ago. Its a fantastic series that certainly brought me to tears more than once. I think I’m gonna pick up Prince Caspian on Audible.com, per Leo Laporte and the TWiT gang’s incessant plugging of the service, and get caught up on that epic book. I can’t wait to see Reepicheep in action on screen. He will rock everyone’s world.
