Don’t ask me how I didn’t realize this, but the 2008 MTV Movie Awards live broadcast was scheduled to take place tonight at Universal Studios Hollywood, parts of which were destroyed in a 3-alarm fire early this morning (see Fire Raging At Universal Studios Hollywood).
No one was seriously hurt in the fire, which blazed through the backlot area, reportedly destroying the King Kong attraction, film vault libraries, and backlot entire sets, including the town square from Back to the Future, as well as the streetscapes for New York and New England.
[UPDATE: Our friend Peter over at /Film spoke to the people at Universal who confirmed that the Clock Tower used in the Back To The Future trilogy is still standing.]
Firefighters have since contained the blaze and the theme park was open for business today; therefore, MTV is reporting that the MTV Movie Awards will go on as planned at Universal Studios Hollywood and air live tonight at 8pm EST (with a live preshow starting at 7:30pm).
See MTV’s video report below.
