For me, Wanted looks more and more interesting each time I see a TV spot or trailer on here. Some things (falling into a speeding car) look a little absurd, but eh, who said a little absurdity wasn’t good times now and again?
For those of of you who who have always been fans of the comic and have waited as impatiently as Lindsay Lohan for that Oscar-worthy role (fingers crossed, tee-hee!), some good news is being spoken of nearly parallel to the film’s release.
Mark Millar — who co-created and wrote the Wanted graphic novel — had this to say to say on his message board:
PS: Wanted 2 already being planned and they’ve asked me how I can develop some of the other stuff from the book into the sequel. We’ll see what box office is like at the weekend, but everyone knows this is going to make a LOT of dough. Wall-E permitting. Fucking bastard of a wee robot.
Whoa, now.
So for all you fans, great news, there seems to be a sequel in the works! I assume the only thing that would stop that would be if Wanted was a complete and utter theatrical failure, which we all know is not going to happen.
But calling out Wall-E, that’s a bit crazy, man. You have to watch out for those robots, they could have all kinds of wacky weapons stored all over. I’m just saying, be careful. Cute as he is, you just never know.
Secondly, our very own Dave3 was able to set up a sweet little Q&A between Mark Millar and Alex Billington over at First Showing. This interview is crucial for the OTHER half of the fans of the comic who think the movie will suck, as it concentrates mainly on Millar’s thoughts and blessing of the movie. If he says it’s true to the comic, you better listen!
It turns out that Miller and Wanted co-creator and artist JG Jones were producers on the film and were involved in the production and script.
JG and I were producers on the picture. It’s not like the old days where the creators get ripped off. We comic guys own these properties now and we’re involved at various stages throughout the entire production. I met with the producers very soon after we did the deal and we agreed on lots of things before moving forward. Then I met with the director to see what he had in mind. Then we had notes on various drafts of the scripts from the very large team of writers working on the movie. Then they flew me out in February to watch over a final cut and make some dialogue tweaks. Comics are very autonomous, but a movie is a huge collaboration.
So, Miller was definitely involved with the film, but what does he think of the final product?
Fucking Hell. I loved it. I could not love it more. As the writer of the original material, it’s weird passing your wee baby over to someone else, but this was like putting someone up for adoption and seeing him come back as Einstein. It’s the best comic adaptation I think I’ve ever seen and hopefully heralds a whole new type of superhero material. Suddenly, the old characters seem pretty old. Timur really raised the bar here. Batman better be really, really good to top this.
Interesting stuff. Hopefully all faces have a smile on them when Wanted comes out this Friday!
Check out the full interview at First Showing and thanks to /Film for the message board tip.
