It’s being reported that Robert Downey Jr. has officially signed on to star as the title character in the Guy Ritchie version of Sherlock Holmes. The movie will be based on both the original character/story as well as a new comic book version being done by Lionel Wigram.
Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in a Guy Ritchie production? Kind of sounds made-up, doesn’t it? I love it.
This makes Sherlock Holmes Mr. Popular lately between this project’s news and the announcement that Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell would be starring in a Judd Apatow-produced take on the crafty British detective and Watson.
To keep the score even, I vote for Ray Winstone as Watson in Ritchie’s version and I push for the two films to be released and to battle on the exact same day.
These movies are both pretty much the same thing, while being completely different and as each moves forward respectively, I find myself more and more interested in each one for all sorts of different reasons. Maybe it’s just me.

I think Downey’ll make an excellent Holmes. He’s got inflection down and I could see fitting in the getup just fine.
