Something interesting has come about today on MySpace in the trailer for Fast & Furious, the fourth movie in The Fast and the Furious franchise, which you can watch here below.
First of all, I do still hate that title. It should be illegal to just remove “the” and “and” from a previous title and use it as a title for your sequel. It’s lazy, man, c’mon now. Aside from this, though, I must say, the trailer brought me back. It looks like I would have expected the first sequel to look. It has the important cast members back, it has the same vibe as the first movie and it looks like potentially good time. These are all things I wasn’t expecting to see.
The movie follows fugitive Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and agent Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) still at each others’ throats, but when they share a common enemy, they need to learn to trust each other. It also stars Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster and is directed by Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift). Fast & Furious hits theaters June 5, 2009.
I liked The Fast and the Furious. There, I said it. But I’m not the first to admit this; for many people, it is indeed a guilty pleasure. It fits it’s title well — it’s entertaining and all-around it’s a good ride. I was 20 years old at the time.
Since then, they’ve spawned two sequels, both of which I’ve never had any desire to see at any one point. Ever. I’ve always been a firm believer that if any sequel wanted to have a chance, it required its original cast; a rule that was not fulfilled, with various cast members showing up here and there in movies that legitimately didn’t look entertaining.
So does the fact that they did it right this time and it looks fun mean that the movie will actually be good? God, no, not in the least. But today, this movie that most had no hope for at all, has a little more appeal, and that’s never a bad thing.
