If you’re a prospective mega-franchise based on an extremely popular video game series like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is, what do you look up to?
That’s right, Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Pirates franchise made billions of dollars and it made a hobby of shattering box office records, making it the natural inspiration.
When screenwriter/creator Jordon Mechner spoke to MTV, he explained how he pitched the idea to Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
As an old-fashioned swashbuckling action-adventure in a tradition going all the way back to the Doug Fairbanks movies. The modern equivalent being “˜Pirates of the Caribbean,’ an example of an old movie made new again, doing a fresh take on it for a modern audience. Tonally, I’d say it’s basically “˜Pirates of the Caribbean’ with maybe a half-step towards “˜Gladiator.’
Mechner also ensured us that Bruckheimer’s influence would be noticeable.
There’ll certainly be a lot of stunts, a lot of special effects. I mean it’s Jerry Bruckheimer! They’re shooting in the deserts of Morocco. The scope of this is going to be massive. It’s really spectacular.
I’m not quite sure Prince of Persia will match Pirates, but they’ve already got Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead — perhaps they’ll try to set him up into a Jack Sparrow-type character. Either way, I have a feeling the film will be a fun little summer ride, so we’ll see how it comes about in 2010 when it’s slated for release.
It cant be a bubbly movie like pirates. I love the pirates movies but The prince of Persia games were a lot closer to Gladiator. I seen pics of Jake in costume .. he looks like he’ll play the role well (more serious type). The movie will need more of an adult approach.
