If you haven’t heard yet, I don’t know how to tell you this… but, Zack Snyder is a machine. OK, well, not really, but I have no idea when that dude actually sleeps.
Just days before Watchmen finally is released to the masses, Snyder is already hard at work on pre-production on his next film, entitled Sucker Punch. Now comes news via Entertainment Weekly that he has begun the casting process for the movie.
Though no castings have been made official, the offers are out to a number of young actresses to fill out this all-girl cast. For the leading role of Baby Doll, Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Alpha Dog) is currently in negotiations. Aside from Seyfried, offers have been put out to Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen, Across the Universe), Abbie Cornish (Stop/Loss), Emma Stone (Superbad), and Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) for roles.
Now, before you go and assume that this is some adaptation of The Hills, fear not. Snyder himself calls the movie “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns” and it’s expected to be R-rated. The movie takes place in the ’60s and is looking at a $100 Million price tag. Check out how it’s being described via /Film:
…tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Seyfried) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Hudgens (“Blondie”), Cornish (“Sweet Pea”), Wood (“Rocket”), and Stone would play Seyfried’s fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality.
While I highly doubt that any of the actors being offered a job by the man who took Watchmen all the way, an interview about the project a week or so back on IESB tells that while they really want Amanda Seyfried, she does have a lot of work going on. I’m not sure if this means her being “in negotiations” means she’s almost a lock, or if she’s still very up in the air.
Also in the interview, Snyder explained his desire for this kind of movie:
Damon [Caro] and I are really, Damon is my stunt choreographer, we’re really trying, I’ve been drawing each shot, we’re just trying to make these action sequences just out of this – just off the frickin scale, planet. Cause I really feel like I’ve never really had the opportunity to make an action movie you know, I mean 300 is action-y but not like I could be, you know, with no rules and machine guns and just everything. I feel like there’s huge potential there that I haven’t really gotten to explore, so that’s kind of what I am excited about.
Sucker Punch looks to start filming this fall, with a release date set for October 8, 2010.
