At their annual meeting, The Disney Company showed a little teaser montage of things to come in order to wow the shareholders. While none of us regular folk are allowed to see the footage, word spread quickly of what was shown.
First, in what’s being described as a “blink-and-you-miss-it” moment — an image of Johnny Depp as the much-talked about Mad Hatter in Tim Burton‘s highly-anticipated live-action/CGI re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. While only seen for just a moment, word is that the “oohs and ahhs” filled the room. The image being described as “Victorian top hat, crimped hair that sticks straight out, and swirl of brightly colored make-up on his eyes, cheeks and lips that resembled the blur of a pinwheel blowing in the breeze.” This description has the Internet buzzing that the leaked image (seen above; click for large) of Depp as the Mad Hatter was actually legit and not some hoax.
Personally, I still think something is still off about all of that. That image may be a trial run or a test of looks, but I still am banking on the final look being a lot more… not terrible. That image above is horrid, and as I like to put it, it looks like Depp taking part in an fashion show circa 1986. There’s no way it was getting “oohs and ahhs” from people invested in the company if you ask me. My guess is that we saw an image of Depp as they were working through looks, and evolving toward whatever they did finally settle on. It’s THAT image that I want to see. Also something to consider is — we don’t know how much of the Mad Hatter is real and how much is CGI/motion capture.
After that, something that is even more exciting than Alice in Wonderland. Disney board members were given a little tour of Pixar, because as the source of this news says, apparently they’ve never been before. Odd. Anyway, the board was shown Pixar’s Up in 3-D. During this screening, the board was also treated to some footage from a little juggernaut-in-the-making — Toy Story 3. Considering Toy Story 3 is next up after Up, and that we always see a little teaser trailer the year before, this is probably that footage. One witness called the footage “jaw-droppingly good,” which really, really excites me. Seriously, I have goosebumps.

I agree that the pic is horrid and i really do hope that this is not the final product (The hair and make-up are bad). JD is an awesome actor but that pic makes him look dead. Burton should stay away from the “everybody looks dead” theme .. although that may be what hes best at (just not for this film).
