E3 2010: Microsoft Dubs Project Natal ‘Kinect’ & Unveils 360 Slim

The Movie God   |  @   |

It has begun! The 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo is underway with Day 1 action and already many exciting and possibly questionable announcements and presentations have been revealed. And once again, the best part about E3 is that G4 is able to broadcast all of the big press conferences and demonstrations right on our TVs, so we’ll be sharing a large chunk of news and glorious new video game videos and trailers with you.

To start things off, Microsoft hit the floor for their presentation and to show off their future plans and products. The big thing people expected to hear about from Microsoft was of course where their much-discussed Project Natal — which wowed a lot of people last year — actually stood now that we know that Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are both about to unleash their own motion-based systems to compete with the Nintendo Wii.

Click on over to read about what was shared today, and to watch the whole darn Microsoft presentation if you so wish.

Microsoft actually made two big announcements, and yes, one did have to do with Project Natal…though maybe not in a way most hoped for. It was revealed that the whole “Project Natal” thing was actually a working title for the duration, and that the final product would actually be called Kinect. Ya know, like “connect,” but different. I don’t know. Like Cloverfield when that was just a working title, I rather liked the Project Natal title and it’s pretty unfortunate that they changed it, especially to something like Kinect, which definitely doesn’t has the same ring to it.

Features of the Microsoft’s motion device include a sensor that apparently swivels to follow your movements, and also one of the more popular features that will allow you to completely control your Kinect interface with voice commands, which you have to admit would be pretty awesome, depending on how well it actually works.

Some games for the Kinect were also shown off, such as Kinect Sports, and this has people a little worried. Last year we saw a demo by Lionhead’s Peter Molyneaux which featured a boy named Milo, and this was a truly incredible demo. Since then, and even to this very day, the games that will be available look a little too much like what we’ve always seen on Wii. I can only suspect that this means it’s going to take a little time before we see the games that can really blow our minds.

Kinect is set to be released on November 4, 2010.

Next up, whispers of a new Xbox 360 Slim model were confirmed by the company. This was perhaps the most exciting part of the day, and even more so for those who were in attendance and found out that apparently, they’ll all be getting one of these new system.

As you can see from the image, the new, skinnier Xbox 360 has a cool look to it, but it’s what’s inside that really counts. The console will tout a 250GB hard drive, a BUILT-IN wi-fi system (one of the areas where PS3 had previously had them beat), and is apparently “whisper quiet.”

I want one right this very moment. And if you have $299, you can…the new 360 will be shipping sometime this week!

Here’s Microsoft’s full presentation.

  1. And still no Blu-ray drive, after the huge success of their HD-DVD Drive ( Not ), wouldn’t this have been an essential component of the new X-Box 360, got the Wi-Fi why not match or beat the PS3???
