The first trailer for Zack Snyder‘s next film Legend of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga’Hoole has been released by Warner Brothers, and you can watch it here now! Snyder is of course best known for his work directing the Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, and Watchmen.

The movie is a fully-animated feature about an owl whose family is in great danger, leading him to seek out the assistance of a legendary group of owls known only in stories as The Guardians of Ga’Hoole who have fought and stopped the very same evil threat before.

Legend of the Guardians is adapted from the first three books of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series, written by Kathryn Lasky. The series spans fifteen books, leaving this new film an open door to a successful franchise if in fact it does well. Judging by the trailer, there’s no reason it will not do just that.

The trailer is really, really beautiful. The animation is wonderful and it looks like it could be another great film from Snyder. The only issue I have is that half way through some mainstream song kicks in. Most people don’t seem to mind this, but it drives me a bit nutty when a song like that comes in and doesn’t seem to fit. The musical score at the beginning is pretty magical, too, so I wish they just stuck with score the whole way. Aside from that, this movie is looking really great so far.

Legend of the Guardian features the voices of Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Helen Mirren, Emile de Ravin, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Ryan Kwanten, Rachel Taylor, David Wenham, and Abbie Cornish.

Synopsis

Soren, is a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owl kind from the evil Pure Ones.

While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences–causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones.

Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians of Ga’Hoole–Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.

  1. At first I thought: Zach, what are you doing to me?

Then I realized why he wanted to make it: Snyder’s a visual filmmaker of the highest order. The possibilities with the script for innovative film making is obvious.

That, and I love owls. I have an owl tattoo. That’s how much I love owls.

  2. Its a little funny they chose him to direct this film, because the books make constant refrences to the battle of the 300. and after the movie 300 came out, i belive in one of the later books the “our arrows will block out the sun” “than we will fight in the shade” bit is slipped in. Almost like Katherin Lasky wanted him to direct it the whole time…..
