Songs For The Geek Soul: Introducing Marian Call & Her ‘Firefly’/’Battlestar Galactica’ Inspired Tunes

The Movie God   |  @   |

We here at Geeks of Doom like to share with you some of the world’s independent artists from time to time. We may not get to do it as often as we’d like to, but when we can it’s always exciting to share with you names and talent that you might not yet know.

Today we want to share with you someone that a lot of you may already be familiar with, but many others will not: Marian Call. Miss Call is an independent singer/songwriter/composer all the way from Anchorage, Alaska. She also happens to be quite the geek, making her the absolute perfect type of artist for us to gush about to you.

Call is on a mission unlike most you will ever see indie musicians undertaking. Her goal is to tour all 50 states, driving to all of them except for Hawaii of course, and without any kind of manager or label handling the mess that is scheduling and setting up shows in every state. No, this isn’t about the tour itself or money or anything musicians tour for; this is all about the music and the joy that it can bring in an intimate setting. Call will not only be playing small venues in all of our states, but many people are even setting up block parties and house concerts for the artist to perform at in certain towns.

Click on over to learn more about Marian Call, where you can hear her work and see her live, and to check out her songs that were inspired by geek-favorites Firefly and Battlestar Galactica!

For me personally, I was pointed to Miss Call when I saw on Twitter that she was looking for information on possible places to play in New Hampshire. Being a resident of the oft-forgotten little state, I attempted to try and help out. To my delightful surprise, I stumbled upon the image you see above…and yes, that is indeed Call and her Captain Malcolm Reynolds replica sidearm from Firefly. Who was this mysterious folk singer-songwriter with a Firefly replica gun?! It takes restraint for any kind of geek not to fall in love after moments such as this. Further research was required.

As it turns out, and as mentioned above, Call is a geek just like you and I. And even better — her entire sophomore album, Got to Fly, is inspired by the Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and Serenity universes, as well as being a geek in general. The album was recorded a couple of years ago, but if you’ve still not heard of Call or her music, you should definitely jump on board. On this particular album you’ll find songs like “It’s Good to Have Jayne On Your Side,” which is an obvious reference, “Dark Dark Eyes,” which is about River Tam, and “Good Old Girl,” which is about BSG‘s Starbuck among others.

My personal favorite has to be “Dark Dark Eyes.” Listening to that song you can’t help but think about how perfect it would be during a River-heavy episode of Firefly. I also really dig “In the Black,” which is a much different song. That’s the great thing about this music: it’s not all the same; there’s different styles and tempos from folk songs to jazz-heavy lounge songs and you’ll jump from singing along to dancing around…if you’re a singy-dancy kinda person, of course.

If this is in fact your first introduction to Marian Call, I’ve embedded her player for Got to Fly here below. There you can take a listen to all of these geek-inspired tunes and see what you think! If you fall in love, you can head to Quantum Mechanix — a site that sells all things geek and actually commissioned the album — to pick up one of only a thousand hand-signed copies for yourself. Once those run out, the only available format will be digital and you can find links to those downloads at her official website. Go forth and acquire them, get yourself some original new indie music, and help out a dedicated artist who’s currently navigating the entire country to share her gifts with us.

Oh, and speaking of: the 50-state tour is going on right now. If you want to see if you can still catch a show or even help set one up in your area, here’s where to go for all info!

  1. Just wanted to let you know we shot video of Marian live recently and, as you mentioned how much you like the song, there’s a video of Dark Dark Eyes here: http://vimeo.com/16574626
