For those who don’t know, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first of a three-part crime thriller series of books, published posthumously from author Stieg Larsson. The first book in the series was adapted into a 2009 Swedish film of the same name, with films based on the other two books, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, soon to follow.
The books and films have been very well-received, and it was not long before an American remake was in the works with Seven and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button director David Fincher behind the wheel. Many A-list stars have pursued the lead roles for the project, with Defiance and Casino Royale‘s Daniel Craig eventually winning out for the male lead Mikael Blomkvist. This only left the title role of Lisbeth Salander with a big question mark looming over it.
Now comes word from Deadline that Fincher has chosen Rooney Mara to play the highly coveted role. Mara is still relatively unknown but has been making a name for herself recently. She has appeared in movies like Youth in Revolt, the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and Fincher’s upcoming The Social Network, which is where the director was able to see her first-hand and realize her potential for the Lisbeth role.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo tells the story of a journalist (Craig) and a computer hacker (Mara) who are hired to help solve the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of a woman forty-years prior.
Mara’s deal is expected to include adaptations of the other two books in the trilogy as well.
