Guillermo del Toro To Write, Direct ‘Trollhunters’ For DreamWorks Animation

The Movie God   |  @   |

The seemingly busiest man in Hollywood just keeps getting busier. It’s being reported that Guillermo del Toro will be writing and directing an animated film for DreamWorks titled Trollhunters.

The movie will be based on a short story that the filmmaker conceived right around the time that he sold his vampire book series The Strain, which he wrote with Chuck Hogan. We first heard that this project was on the way last year when it was announced that del Toro would be heading a new production label with Disney called Double Dare You.

Del Toro’s involvement in animated films came when he recognized the constant evolution of animated films and their importance, leading him to get more involved. He’s even got his own office at DreamWorks Animation and will be serving as a executive producer and consultant on multiple upcoming projects, including Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom, Megamind, and Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots.

Speaking on the project, del Toro had this to say:

I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it’s thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff.

Trollhunters is still a few years off. Del Toro has begun work on the script, but has mainly been setting up his exciting adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. That seemed to be a movie that was finally happening, but it looks like all of the work he is doing on it right now is to build a general idea of what he wants to do and how much it will cost. In a few weeks, he’ll meet with Universal Pictures to present his plans, and hope that they’re satisfied with the plans and give it the official greenlight.
