This is a reach back in time, but far before Bryan Singer made his big budget Superman adaptation, Tim Burton was actually set to direct the movie from a script by Kevin Smith. It sounds strange to even think of such a duo now — and if you’ve seen Smith’s An Evening With Kevin Smith then you know of the many hilarious stories that came from that endeavor — but it was happening for a time, and Burton did some work setting up his Man of Steel.
Steve Johnson, a special effects and makeup artist who worked on the movie before it was scrapped, has now released a ton of pictures from what they came up with. Most of the images show either the test suit they were working on for Superman, and some concept stuff they were developing.
You can see exactly what we mean by clicking on over to the other side. Be warned, Superman purists, you may experience sharp pains in various parts of your body just by thinking of what this would have looked like on the big screen!
One thing that’s always lingered over the head of a new Superman, is that his costume doesn’t translate well to modern times. At the same time, it’s also far too iconic to even bother changing much. But Burton and his crew decided to do just that, and what they came up with is a majorly trippy, almost psychedelic-looking Superman costume.
Here are the pictures. You can see more by heading to Mr. Johnson’s Facebook page.

These are pretty wild. I can see that it would have made the studio nervous being that they were such a departure from the status quo. It’s like Superman meets Xanadu or something.
This would have been a much more interesting movie that the one we got which just regurgitated everything we already knew and previously enjoyed. boo-hiss.

Weird, but interesting, and probably would of been better than Superman Returns.

And somehow…I like it! Granted, this is just pre-production/concept stuff but I’d have paid to see a finished product. At least the pairing of Tim Burton and Kevin Smith had a somewhat honest quality about it. You know they would’ve pushed the envelope but made something fun and unique at the same time. Superman Returns was neither.

These look reminiscent of the Blue & Red Energy Supermen of years gone by when DC trotted out the new-look Supes.
Like the song says, “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape…” so why the hell should anyone try ? Sometimes when you trade tradition for progress you get neither and Burton’s vision certainly proves it.
