BabyCakes NYC Invades Downtown Disney Orlando!

Babycakes NYCBabycakes NYC bakery has opened up a new location in Downtown Disney at Disney World Orlando!

Babycakes NYC is a specialty bakery with gluten-free and vegan options that are all-natural, organic, and free from common allergens, like wheat, gluten, dairy, casein, and eggs. Oh, and their desserts are amazingly delicious!

Babycakes NYC founder Erin McKenna announced the news yesterday on the shop’s blog. McKenna said she was approached two years ago by restaurateur Larry Levy of Spiaggia to partner with him on a project to bring healthier food to Disney. Along with Babycakes NYC, comes Levy’s other eateries Pollo Campero and Fresh Apeel. (Apparently, McDonald’s got the old boot back in April, who knew? Buh-bye!)

Right now, the bakery at Downtown Disney does not have sign, but you can find them by going into the building marked Fresh Apeel; the bakery is in the right hand nook. Also, the phones aren’t working there yet, so but you can email them at DTD@babycakesnyc.com to order birthday cakes, donuts, cookies, brownies, and cupcakes!

This, to me, is probably the greatest news I’ve reported all year, considering that I’m veg*n and so is Geeks of Doom’s Dave3, so now we’ll finally have wonderful desserts to partake in while visiting Disney World in Florida. Oh yeah, we’re crazy Disneyphiles too — we go to Disney World on average once per year thanks to my long-time Disney Vacation Club membership. And, we’re going on vacation there early next year, so weeeeeeeee!!!! I get to have vegan desserts!!!

Back in 2006, Dave3 got my birthday cake from the BabyCakes NYC location in New York City (on Broome Street). A second location was opened in Downtown Los Angeles on East 6th Street. Visit the Babycakes NYC site for more details on location, menus, and for their mission to create delicious healthy, alternative desserts.

By the way, upon hearing this news, Dave3 and I have come to the conclusion that we can take some credit for these healthier eateries coming to Disney World. On our last trip there, we were asked to take part in a lengthy survey regarding the foods offered at Disney; the survey was multiple choice, but there was also a part where you could write in your comments and let’s just say, we wrote a lot. While I love French fries, the last thing I want to do is eat them for every meal for a week because there’s hardly any other food options.

One last thing, and I don’t want to be preachy or anything, but I just have to stress: Don’t be frightened by the sound of ‘vegan dessert.’ Unlike other foods, vegan desserts do NOT have ‘weird’ ingredients in them, unlike non-vegan items that have say gelatin (you know what gelatin is made from?). It doesn’t taste like cardboard or like a bran muffin, so fear not! If it makes you feel any better, it’s healthier, but there’s still fat in it. Hand one to your kid to eat and they will not notice the difference, and while it’s sweet, they won’t be hopped up like they would on processed white sugars as with other desserts. Obviously, those of you with allergies will really appreciate the offerings at Babycakes NYC. (Yes, it’s my favorite bakery, I’ve been going to it for years!)

If any of you readers are heading out to Disney World and make it to Babycakes NYC, let us know what you think!

  2. It should be noted that just about any WDW restaurant will do a vegan meal if you give them 24 hours notice. It’s hard having BabyCakes down here, though – I live less than 5 min from it now. Oh, the temptation! LOL

  3. I am so excited to have the opportunity for my 2 year old that has a dairy allergy to be able to go into a bakery and pick out a treat.  This means the world to a parent of a child with a food allergy!
