At last summer’s D23 Expo, we got a tiny glimpse at what the Disney Imagineers have in mind for their Avatar-themed expansion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Disney World Resort. Ground broke back in January at the Orlando theme park on the new land, which is being created in conjunction with Avatar director James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment.
The folks over at the Disney fan site MouseSteps posted a video of some Avatar-colored twinkling lights seen this weekend on the Animal Kingdom’s centerpiece, the Tree of Tree. The lights were part of the park’s new special event, Harambe Nights, which celebrates the story of Disney’s The Lion King. Check out the video here below.
From MouseSteps:
Twinkling blue lights surprised us on the Tree of Life tonight as we left Harambe Nights at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park! It looked very pretty, and is supposedly connected to the Lion King – but with all the blue, it reminded everyone of the Avatar section of the park being built.
So it seems the blue lights are likely as Easter egg of sorts to hint at what’s to come at the park without making it official. Either way, what seems to be an amazing new land inspired by Cameron’s groundbreaking film is to come, and I’m guessing we’ll have more subtle hints appearing several more times before the new world is ready for the public.
According to Disney Parks, which posted photos from January’s groundbreaking ceremony, said of the upcoming new land that “guests will experience the wonders of Pandora when they fly with banshees and explore a rich natural environment with mountains that float and interactive plants that glow at night.” (You can also see some concept art for the expansion.)

I’m excited about this expansion and hope that it turns out to be as awesome as they’re making it out to be.
