Gov. William H. Seward Statue dons The Cape. Madison Square Park, New York

So I’m strolling along the post-blizzard streets of New York City earlier this week when I spotted a new stand-up plaque at the foot of the William H. Seward statue at the southwest entrance of Madison Square Park. From afar I spotted the words, The Cape, which I know is new superhero drama premiering this weekend on NBC.

As I got a little closer, I realized that the statue of Seward was now newly adorned with a flowing black cape! I crossed the park to find at the other end the statue of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut was also donning a cape and had a similar plaque as well.

Check out the photos I took of the statues here below. It was an amazing sight, I’m glad I happened upon it!

On the plaques were details of the historic figures’ greatest achievements and how they are similar to The Cape‘s main character Vince Faraday (David Lyons), a good cop who’s framed for crimes he didn’t commit who becomes a masked and caped vigilante fighting crime and trying to win his family back.

The 2-hour premiere of The Cape is tonight, Sunday, January 9 (9-11 p.m. ET) and will later move to its regular time slot on Mondays (9-10 p.m. ET) starting January 17.

When I got home I checked my email to find a press release regarding this viral event, which was done in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, where 30 historic statues throughout the city were caped in conjunction with the premiere of The Cape.

Today is the final day to see the statues caped up, so get out and about in the city today if you can to take a look at this really cool site. Visit www.herobehindthecape.com for a list of locations where statues were caped.

There’s also a sweepstakes going on where you can enter for a chance to win an Apple iPad and a grand prize of a New York City “hero” experience (today’s the last day to enter). Here’s the details:

Participants can enter the sweepstakes by visiting any one of the 30 caped statues all over New York City and checking in via their FourSquare account. Also, visitors can enter by taking a photo of themselves at any of the statue locations and posting their photo to Twitter. Users will simply need to direct message the official Twitter handle (www.twitter.com/NBCTheCape) or use the hashtag #herobehindthecapeswps when they post their picture.

The grand-prize winner will receive the ultimate New York City “Hero” treatment including a luxurious dinner for two, limo service, two tickets to the taping of an NBC audience show and an Apple iPad.

Check back at Geeks of Doom later today for our Winter 2011 Primer on The Cape with more details on the show as well as trailers and clips.
