WTF? The Big 4 To Play A Small 1: Only One U.S. Show Announced
space
cGt2099   |

You SuckMetal fans and followers will remember that yesterday we posted news that The Big 4 (meaning Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer) would be making a major announcement today via their Facebook page regarding a U.S. tour dates. Everybody assumed, justifiably so, that it would be the announcement of a major Big 4 U.S. tour. Boy, were we way off, and the resulting rampage of fury and anger from metalheads across the country should make the so-called Big 4 hang their heads in shame!

It turns out that the “major” announcement was that the 4 bands would be playing a show. That’s “a” show. As in one. Singular. Uno.

The Big 4 will be playing their one show in Indio, California on April 23, 2011, at the Empire Polo Club and…

Wait, what? A club? The Empire Polo Club doesn’t seem to have seating charts in many places in the short Google search I did, but one report I found mentioned a capacity of no more than 1,000*. I cannot vouch for the reliability and accuracy of that information, but if there is any validity to it, why choose such a lame venue for one show?

What is this business of doing one show anyway? The bands are marketing this as their “first and only” show together in the United States. These four bands are part of the biggest movement in metal history, all contributing important music to the development of the thrash metal movement, which has inspired countless other sub-genres since those days. Their namesake is legendary.

Their marketing cry of “America, your demands have been answered” really translates to the fact that there will be hiked-up costly merchandise at the show, the tickets will be outrageously expensive and undoubtedly difficult to obtain, and they’ll release another DVD from this single event.

Dear Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer: Fuck you, guys. If you REALLY want to answer the demands of your fans, cut the shit and get on the road.

[*UPDATE: Someone contact me to verify that the venue can hold way more than 1,000, and they usually have concert events there outdoors.]

  1. The empire polo club is a polo field its where both the Coachella music and arts festival and Stagecoach are held. It holds 60,000-75,000 people.

  3. The Empire Polo Fields hold 60,000 plus.

  6. Maybe they’re doing a MAKE-A-WISH thing and playing to a crowd of like 1,000 people who are dying… OR ABOUT TO BE KILLED! AAAAAAAAAHH!!!

  7. Same place as Coachella so yes it can handle a crowd. Still disappointing. I was looking for them to hit at least one major city in Texas. Lame.

  8. The Empire Polo Fields is where Coachella is done every year. It is an outdoor venue that can easily hold 100,000 guests.

  9. it’s the same place they hold coachella and it’s well over 1000 people capacity…..it’s all outdoor and from what I have heard, without reserved seating I know during coachella a couple years ago they said it was 45,000+

1000 would be waaaaaaaayyyyyy off, i’ve been there and the place is huge and outdoors. but again, that depends on how many stages they are using and whether or not they will block it off. Luckily, it’s here a couple hours from me…. but I do agree, they really should have done a tour. that’s kinda shitty

  10. Coachella.com is held there every year and the venue can hold 60K +

  11. It’s also possible they’re trolling their fans. They could come out tomorrow and say JUST KIDDING

  12. Empire Polo Fields is a HUGE venue…it host the Coachella Music Festival which has 60,000 or so annually.

That being said, that is still BS…way to go BIG4!!!!

  13. It would have been nice if you had done your research…its the Empire Polo FIELD…you know, the place were they hold Coachella every year…50,000+ people walk through the gates of Coacella on each of the 3 days its held….please try not to be so lame next time.

  14. Don’t worry… The Empire Polo Field is where they do Coachella. 75,000+ were there last year.

    Comment by Shleee — January 25, 2011 @ 4:13 pm

  15. The Polo Club holds about 300,000 as that is where the Coachella festival is every year…. in fact, it’s the week before this show.

    Comment by Dan — January 25, 2011 @ 4:14 pm

  16. Empire is the same place that hosts Coachella Fest. It holds tens of thousands. All outdoor.

    Comment by nicole — January 25, 2011 @ 4:23 pm

  17. It’s held the same place as Coachella and has a 45,000 person capacity over 400 acres of fields. Closest major airport is Palm Springs International. Should be a blast, hope this info helps!

  18. Look, I don’t give a shit how many people this one venue holds, the fact is, it’s ONE venue!!!! What is the purpose of only doing 1 U.S. date? Are we all supposed to fly out for this gig and HOPE to get tickets? Why can’t they just do a full tour? It’s not like it wouldn’t be profitable.

And Justin Metal, I’ll stop bitching after you fund my all-expenses-paid trip to this concert.

Oh, and smartass James, the official announcement said “CLUB” ok, dude? Go mouth off to Metallica if you have a problem.

    Comment by Empress Eve — January 25, 2011 @ 6:17 pm

  19. Thanks to those who clarified the size of the venue. In my defense, the announcement did say “club”, so the post was written under that assumption.

While we do appreciate the corrections, it’s still a poorly managed announcement. There were hundreds of fans expecting a tour announcement, not a web page with essentially a ‘flyer’ for one gig. The majority of the responses on The Big 4 Facebook reflect the animosity and anger of the fans.

I’m hoping that the responses by fans get through to the bands, instead of just being ignored by the people who were managing the Facebook announcement.

  20. Who cares if it hold 700,000 people why is there only one date!! this is BS! Atleast A show in New York, Florida, Texas, Phoenix,az and 2 in california holywood and sacramento for jesus christ’s sake!!

    Comment by Otoniel — January 26, 2011 @ 12:51 am

  21. From the MetClub newsletter last night: “The Big Four Coming To The States! You’ve probably heard us all say it…the vibe was just so incredible at last year’s Big 4 shows that we can’t stop now!! So we’re finally bringing the love to our home turf on April 23, 2011 with ‘Tallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax in Indio, CA at the Empire Polo Club (yes, the more observant of you will note that this is the same spot where the Coachella Festival takes place the weekend before). It’s true – this is indeed the only scheduled stop in America this go around, so we’re hoping that you can head West to join us. Tickets go on sale this Friday, January 28 at 10 AM PST and Fan Club members can check MetClub.com for pre-sale and VIP package info.”

On a related note, I can’t believe how harsh some of these comments are! OP presented an opinion based on the official flyer (at TheBig4Festival.com) and sought clarification on the venues size. More than a dozen comments about Coachella later and the OP is the one who’s treated like an idiot? How many of you couldn’t be bothered to read the comments before yours? Many of you might’ve seen that Coachella was already referred to ad nauseum. A couple of you who slammed him for not being diligent in his research can easily be accused of the same! Bad form.

  23. I heard Lars on KROQ (local LA radio station) say that if this goes well there will likely be more shows added later…they kind of want to feel out things here first. Personally I don’t know why they need to “feel things out”. I am sure there is more than enough support around the country to do 10 dates all over. Then they could see if they wanted to add more…just my 2 cents.

    Comment by Jeff — January 27, 2011 @ 4:07 pm

  24. Lol at the butthurt Americans. I’m from Canada eh! I live in an igloo, eat maple
syrup and log for a living. It’s way to cold up north of the border from these guys to consider bringing it here. What did I do about it?

I got off my ass and called my travel agent. If you care so badly, get up and book a trip. Don’t whine and pine over the Internet. This is why they’re so damn sceptical about bookin more dates. If they aren’t parked in your backyard, nobody wants to get up and travel a bit for such an amazing experience.
