DC The Search

DC’s bi-weekly series Brightest Day is getting close to the end, and so it has come time for them to announce the inevitable follow-up, which will be called The Search.

According to a post on DC’s Source Blog, The Search will be a 3-issue miniseries launching in June, written by Jonathan Vankin with art by Marco Castiello. The story will focus on the new protector of Earth, and another hero trying to convince the Justice League that this new protector may not be the best thing for the world.

Brightest Day has followed some of the heroes brought back to life at the end of Blackest Night, namely Aquaman, Deadman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and Firestorm. The series has followed them as they try to understand why they were brought back, as well as unraveling the mystery of what the White Lantern is and what its goals are.

It has been a decent series so far and I’m looking forward to seeing how the series ends and how it will tie-in to future events. Without knowing how Brightest Day will end, I can’t really say what I expect will happen in this series. Judging purely on the cover art provided by DC — which you can see in full by clicking the image at top — Batman and Superman and one other hero are talking to whoever has the doubts about the protector, and neither of them look too happy about it.

As for the creative team on The Search, well frankly, I’ve never heard of them. Vankin is an editor for DC’s Vertigo line, but has done some writing in the past. It looks like Castiello worked for Marvel on the Secret Invasion: Frontline mini as well as a few other series, but I have not been exposed to his work before. This could be a chance to see a couple of new talents in action, and it’s cool to see DC give them a shot on a fairly high profile book. Will it be any good? We’ll just have to wait and see.
