The ‘Fallout’ Movie That Never Happened; Would You Have Seen It?

The Movie God   |  @   |

Fans of Bethesda Softworks’ Fallout franchise may not know this (I certainly didn’t), but way back in 1998 a movie adaptation of the first game in the series was in the works. Interplay Entertainment, who owned Fallout and Fallout 2 developer Black Isle Studios, had begun a new division called Interplay Films with plans of making multiple movies based on their games.

After the popular debut of the first Fallout in 1997 it was obviously a world that was perfect for film adaptation, but sadly it would never come to be; even with multiple studios interested in the movie, Interplay closed its film division and that was that. Three outlines of what was to become a script were written by Brent V. Friedman while it was still being developed, however, and recently the second treatment was found on a old floppy disk.

So would a Fallout movie have worked or would it have just become another example of how horrible video game movies have been over the years? Click on over to the other side now to find out where you can read the full treatment and share your thoughts below!

Of the unexpected discovery of this treatment, Friedman said “It was surprisingly fun to read it after all these years. There are some things I would definitely change (obviously, there are many outdated references, etc.) but there are also scenes and aspects of this story which I still love.”

Even though this attempt at a movie failed, it does not mean one won’t happen in the future. Back in 2009, Bethesda began going through the process of securing trademarks for any potential movies or TV series based on the games.

After you’ve read the treatment, tell us what you thought. Could this Fallout movie have worked? For me, parts of it were definitely silly but a lot of it sounded pretty entertaining as well. If in the right hands I could absolutely see this working as a movie back in ’98 and I think with some big alterations here and there, it could still work today as well.

All of that said, I think the perfect setting would be an HBO, Showtime, or Starz. Can you imagine a series on HBO that’s based on Fallout? Few things would be more exciting to fans of this incredible video game series.

  2. This movie needs to come out now… It would get a bigger following then Cloverfield did!!!

  3. Based on other films Brent Friedman has written (most notably Mortal Kombat: annihilation) I am glad this Fallout movie never happened. It would have sullied the entire franchise, but now that Fallout has a larger cult following a future movie, with a bigger budget could really be something to look forward to, as long as it sticks to the theme, doesn’t include pop culture or Nicholas Cage and is directed at Fallout fans rather than 10 year olds in an effort to market merchandise. I would even be excited to see a low budget film, as long as it stays true to the theme of the Fallout universe. For anyone itching for some post-apocalyptic fallout-esque viewing, I would suggest “A Boy And His Dog” (1975), it is the closest film I have found to resemble Fallout (with the exception of the dog-human telepathy)
