For most big fans of IO Interactive’s Hitman franchise, it’s been known that the studio was very likely working on a long-awaited fifth title, though no official announcement had been made…until now.
Yes, after many rumors bathed in other rumors cuddled up in cozy blankets of rumors — a rumor Snuggie, if you will — we finally have official word: Hitman 5 is coming, and it will be titled Hitman: Absolution…which of course had been rumored recently.
You can read some new details about the game and see the very brief but exciting teaser trailer by clicking on over to the other side now.
According to 1UP, IO made the announcement via a press release with some new details in regards to what we can expect. The new game is “built from the ground up” with an entirely new engine (the Glacier 2 engine), and though it will still have that stealthy gameplay fans crave out of a Hitman game, there will be some new features to enjoy as well.
Absolution is said to be a much more personal story revolving around the series’ main character, Agent 47. This time around 47 has been betrayed, placing him in the center of a dark conspiracy with authorities on his trail.
That’s about all we know right now, but a demo is expected to be shown off “behind closed doors” at next month’s E3 convention, so we’ll know much more after that.
The last Hitman game we saw was Blood Money five years ago this month, and that game was basically developed for the original Xbox with a smoother Xbox 360 version also released with some better textures and things like that. Faithful fans of the series have been waiting ever since for game made truly for the 360’s capabilities — they just didn’t think they would be waiting so long, and this resulted in some outrage.
See, instead of making the Hitman game everyone has been screaming for, IO decided to make a little game called Kane & Lynch. There’s nothing wrong with this — it makes perfect sense for a game maker to step away from a franchise and try something new — but the game unfortunately ended up being pretty bad. So you would think that they would shift their attention back to our beloved Agent 47 and feed the angry beast that was their impatient fanbase. But no, this is where they made the mind-boggling decision to make yet ANOTHER Kane & Lynch, which was just a little bit better than the first but still fairly mediocre, leading to said outrage…as you might imagine.
Now that another Hitman is officially coming none of that really matters to we the fans; we’re getting what we’ve been wanting for so very long. The most confusing thing is really the decision to make a second Kane & Lynch. IO and Square Enix could have had a couple of good Hitman games made for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and made tons of money, but instead, they’ll now only get one before the next generation of gaming console is released and it all starts again. Yeah, they might have the time to rush one more out, but it’s not very likely.
As it stands, Hitman: Absolution is expected to release at some point in 2012 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
