Martin Freeman said that his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining him in The Hobbit, according BBC News Entertainment Correspondent Lizo Mzimba.
Mzimba tweeted the news earlier today while covering the BAFTAs, where the BBC series Sherlockwon for Best Drama with its star Freeman snagging the Best Supporting Actor award. (See screenshot of tweet here below.) The reporter has not posted any follow-up information at this time.
Sherlock, which was co-written and co-created by current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, is a modern take on the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle detective Sherlock Holmes and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. The first season was three 90-minute episodes; the second season, which is scheduled to air in the UK this Fall, will also consist of three 90-minute episodes.
If Freeman and Cumberbatch are reunited for The Hobbit, this would be awesome, as the actors really play well against each other. Even if they turn out not to be in any scenes together, having Cumberbatch in the film in any way would very cool. Now that Freeman — who will play the titular hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit — has let this little tidbit slip, it’s only a matter of time before Hobbit director and Lord Of The Rings film franchise mastermind Peter Jackson will divulge some details, like who exactly will Cumberbatch play in the film (that is, if Cumberbatch has actually signed on and not just “in talks”). Earlier this week, Jackson confirmed via Facebook that Stephen Fry had joined the cast as The Master of Laketown, with Ryan Gage playing The Master’s civil servant, Alfrid.
And if you haven’t seen Sherlock yet, Season 1 is out in the U.S. on DVD and Blu-ray — I highly recommend it!
