GoD List Banner

Each and every week “The Hench” and “The Fac3” read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 20, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

On this week’s The GoD List, “THE HENCH” goes crazy over the newly revamped Daredevil, The Rocketeer, and One Soul, while “THE FAC3” gets excited by Retro DC, a Flashpoint tie-in, and a lot of collections. The common threads between this demented duo? Adam West and horror comics. Stay tuned, folks, you’re in for a bumpy ride.

ISSUES

The Outsider #2Flashpoint: The Outsider #2 (of 3) (DC Comics – $2.99): I wouldn’t have thought that I would pick this book for the GoD List, but at the same time, I never would have thought I’d enjoy the first issue. But I did. It blew me away. The character work in the first issue was done so incredibly well that you were both in awe of how bad ass The Outsider was, while also feeling emotional attached to the character due to the book’s exposure of his upbringing. The Outsider #1 was a really fun, stylish book about a guy who didn’t fit in and made the most out of it. And I can’t wait for more. I’m not really enjoying the overall narrative of Flashpoint, but books like this make the crossover event worth it.

The Misadventures of Adam West #1 (Bluewater Comics – $3.99): I would easily pay any amount of money to get my hands on this book. Adam West was my childhood icon, and it gives me great please to, as an adult, read an alternate reality story about his life. It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that I want to read a Bluewater book in an non-ironic way, but geez. Let me give you a rundown. A mysterious fan delivers an mystical amulet to Adam West that messes with the timestream and causes Adam West’s career to change, ultimately making Adam West the hero of savior of the universe. I’ve had several dreams that have been this exact same scenario. Some with me as the mysterious fan, and sometimes I’m actually his sidekick on his epic journey. Either way, it’s the opposite of a nightmare. I’ve been heavily anticipating this book, and I can’t get to the comic shop fast enough. Also, I think Hench has something to say about this book, as well.

My third choice is going to be a hodge podge this week as I’m pretty sure the new Locke and Key starts this week, but I’m not entirely sure. So, if you’re at the store, and you see Locke and Key: Clockworks #1, make sure to buy it because it’s pretty much going to be the best thing you could read. If it’s not in your store, be sure to pick up…

DC Comics Retroactive Series – The 1970s (DC Comics – $5.99): This week’s installments of the DC Comics Retroactive series feature one of the best and most fun time periods in DC Comics’ history: The 1970s. With creators like Len Wein, Denny O’Neill, and Carey Bates taking on Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, respectively, it’s hard not to get excited by this. Each issue will feature a brand new 26 page story in style of the 1970s while also having a reprinted backup story of the same character from the same writer. And oh yeah, Wonder Woman is mod. How could you not want to read this? It sounds like a blast.

COLLECTIONS

There are a lot of trades coming this week that I’m personally excited for including the DC Comics Presents: Metal Men #1 which promises some classic Metal Men and Doom Patrol insanity and The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3, Vol. 3 which collects the final issues from the recent 12 issue maxi series, which I love, but have yet been able pick up issue #11 because my region got shorted on issues. Gah! But anyway, those are two things you’ve gotta check out, but what I’m really excited for is the release of the…

Edge of Doom TP (IDW Publishing – $19.99): Aside from having a totally awesome name, this mini series brought together two of the greatest horror comics creators working in the business today, Kelley Jones and Steve Niles. This trade paperback collects five separate issue from these twisted geniuses that explore the horror genre. I was only able to pick up one issue when it was initially released, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating this book’s arrival since I finished the first issue.

Here you go

ISSUES

Daredevil #1Daredevil #1 (Marvel Comics – $3.99): This is the second of the Big Shots relaunches (the first being Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev’s Moon Knight, the third being Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto’s Punisher), and while I haven’t been picking up Moon Knight, this one has me very excited. When last we left Matt Murdock, the man without fear, he was wandering in the desert trying to forget the mess he had made of his life during the Shadowland arc. Now, writer Mark Waid is going to return him to New York and try to get this character back on track. It will be interesting to see how this interacts with the Black Panther series, as currently BP is the protector of Daredevil’s old stomping grounds in Hell’s Kitchen, but that should just give the character a new setting. Art for the series is by Paolo Rivera, and Marcos Martin, and if you’re familiar with either of their works, you already know that this is going to look spectacular. If you haven’t seen their work, Rivera has a clean painted style while Martin has more of a retor 70’s animated look to his art. I’m curious to see how they will be splitting the art and I think that is just another aspect that is going to make this a great book to read.

Rocketeer Adventures #3 (IDW Publishing – $3.99): The first two issues were awesome, so why should I expect anything less from the third issue? This time we get stories written by Joe Lansdale, and Jonathan Ross, with art from Tommy Lee Edwards, Bruce Timm, and a story written and drawn by Ryan Sook. It’s the Sook story that I am looking forward to the most. I know he can create a great story, as proven in Action Comics #900, and I fully expect him to show up for this issue. I knew Rocketeer Adventures was going to be great when it was announced, I just had no idea how great it was going to be. Definitely one of the standouts of the summer.

Criminal Macabre/The Goon: When Freaks Collide (Dark Horse Comics – $3.99): Surprisingly, I’m more interested in the Criminal Macabre section of this crossover than I am of The Goon part, but I’m still curious. If you’ve never heard of Criminal Macabre, it is a Steve Niles creation, featuring a down on his luck detective named Cal MacDonald who investigates crimes dealing with different kinds of ghouls, ghosts, and monsters. The Goon is Eric Powell’s creation, and he is a tough guy who fights ghouls, ghosts, and monsters. So it makes sense that the two characters would interact. I’m more interested to see what the tone of the book is since Criminal Macabre is generally a pretty serious book and The Goon (at least as I understand it) is more humorous, but I think it will work out. The art is by Christopher Mitten, whose work I last saw on Wasteland. There it was a sketchy, angular style with a lot of dark inks on the page, and if that style carries over, it will fit the Macabre portions perfectly. I expect this to be a fun one-shot that will serve as a good introduction to some characters that you may not have read before.

COLLECTION

One Soul (Oni Press – $24.99): This is a book that I ordered on the strength of the publisher without knowing that much about the actual comic. Oni has released a lot of very strong material over the years, whether it is Scott Pilgrim, or The Sixth Gun, or Queen and Country. They have a very strong track record, and I think they have another solid title on their hands with One Soul. One Soul is written and drawn by Ray Fawkes and follows 18 characters through life in what Oni calls “a unique and poetic narrative”. Now I don’t know about all that, but I love a serious, personal comic book as much as I love a good action-adventure story, and One Soul sounds like it is right up my alley. If you’re looking for something a bit more mature in the best way, give this book a shot.

SPECIAL ADAM WEST ADDENDUM

The Misadventures of Adam West #1 (Bluewater Comics – $3.99): It’s a comic book. About Adam West. In an action adventure story. There is no universe where this isn’t the best comic on the stands, and if you say otherwise then I don’t want to know you. Okay, I’m kidding about that part, I’m sure this is going to be bad, but it’s going to be bad in the best way possible. There’s an exotic amulet and he looks like James Bond and it’s going to change our lives forever. If this book had a soundtrack by Wyld Stallions, we’d have world peace, no one would be hungry, and we’d all be flying around in our hover boots. Seriously, buy this book. The world may depend on it.
