SDCC 2011: Knights of Badassdom: Peter Dinklage

In case you missed the recently released trailer, Knights of Badassdom looks like it might just possibly become the greatest movie ever made.

It tells the story of two heavily involved LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) enthusiasts (played by Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn) who bring their recently single friend (Ryan Kwanten) in to experience the joys of the LARP…which he doesn’t seem to be too big on. But when Zahn’s character accidentally summons a succubus and things become ooey–gooey evil, the LARPers must join forces with others like them and use their “skills” to defeat the beast.

Keep reading for more and to see some images from the Knights of Badassdom panel.

The panel featured Dinklage, Kwanten, and director Joe Lynch, as well as co–stars Summer Glau (Firefly), Danny Pudi (Community), Jimmi Simpson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Michael Gladis (Mad Men), and Margarita Levieva (Adventureland), who plays the succubus.

Lynch talks about the movie, and how it’s a nice mixture of horror and action and comedy and so on. The best movies are ones that offer up a pleasant mixture of multiple genre’s””a “sampler,” if you will. There’s even a strong heavy metal element to the movie, one that would surely make Tenacious D proud. Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead composer Bear McCreary is handling the Badassdom score, which Lynch describes as a heavy metal orchestra.

Lynch also touched on the LARPing itself, saying that they didn’t make the movie to mock the activity. In fact, says the director, many real LARPers were brought in to help train the actors in the ways and rules of the event, and some of them even appear in the movie. Fear not, LARPers, you can see this movie with pride in your eyes!

That’s about all there was worth noting during the Knights of Badassdom panel.

I’m curious what HBO thinks of the movie, which features three of its stars (Game of Thrones‘ Dinklage, True Blood‘s Kwanten, and Treme‘s Zahn) in the lead roles.

  1. Knights of Badassdom was one of the winner at Comic Con; who knew the film 2 weeks ago?
Can’t wait to see it in theater. Fansite says Spring 2012.
