Marvel sent out an ad with some preview panels from Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #3, which goes on sale October 12, 2011. In a way you could call them pretty spoilery because the images combined with the single line from the comic seem to reveal what’s probably the core of the story for that issue. So, if you don’t want to be possibly spoiled you may want to click away PDQ! Otherwise, check out the preview here below.
The image shows our new Spider-Man, or a more apt name might be Spider-Boy, completing a daring rescue that surprises him and a bystander, or friend maybe? At any rate he seems to discover his abilities to a greater degree in this issue by instinctively doing the hero thing.
Last issue set the character up by developing some of his family members and even revealing a new power that good ol’ Peter Parker never had. That new power is a point of discussion, and argument all alone, but that’s for another article. The point here is the story seems to be moving at a snail’s pace. Peter Parker’s death was fairly lengthy and now we’re being asked to watch another origin, a very familiar one, all over again. The original Spidey origin was told in an issue. How long are we going to have to wait before this new web head gets his red and blue’s and starts kicking some butt?
A new ethnic background for the character isn’t enough to make a reboot of the old Spider-Man origin riveting reading. Brian Michael Bendis is a great writer, so he’s sure to take advantage of this new character’s point of view but so much of the character is the same as Peter Parker, outside of the obvious, that the story seems old hat and it also seems to be “crawling” by. So, basically this preview that Marvel sent out did the opposite of enthrall me, which I’m sure is what they were going for.
Check out the preview image and judge for yourself. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #3 goes on sale in stores and on the Marvel Comics App on October 12, 2011.
