One of my favorite comics out of the DC Relaunch was easily Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.. The comic is about Frankenstein. Yes, that Frankenstein. Well, technically Frankenstein’s monster, but let’s not split hairs. He is an undead monster who works for a special ops organization and is set to be the leader of a special group. And that special group is made up of other Universal Studios-style monsters like a werewolf, a vampire, and a creature that looks like she could be from a black lagoon.
But it’s not just the spectacle and the insanity of this comic that draws me in. Yes, that is a huge draw, sure, but what’s so great about it is the way Jeff Lemire writes these characters and how he makes them relatable and hilarious. It’s crazy, fun, and action packed, and with Alberto Ponticelli‘s art, it looks beautiful, as well. It would have fit in perfectly on the Vertigo imprint in the 80s, but now that DC has taken a lot of those characters back into the main universe and placed them under the “Dark and Edge” banner, it’s a welcome return.
So, why am I talking about this comic? Well, first of all, it’s awesome and you should totally be reading it, and secondly THR has an exclusive preview of the second issue. So, if you haven’t read the first issue, try to find it in your local comic shop, online, or pick it up through the DC digital app. You won’t regret it.
Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #2 was released on Wednesday, October 12, 2011.
