If you’re a music geek who likes their mp3 downloads nice and legal, you should go check out the this month’s sale over at Amazon’s MP3 store where they have 100 albums on sale for $5 each from various genres and artists. Most of these albums have ten or more tracks, and with single MP3s going for at least 99 cents, this deal gives you way more tuneage for your buck.
There are several excellent albums being offered for the rest of October, but my personal favorite of the bunch would have to be Rockin’ The Suburbs by Ben Folds, again for only $5.
Whenever someone asks me about Mr. Folds’ music, Rockin’ The Suburbs is the album I suggest they try first. Not only because it contains several of my top ten tracks by Folds, but also because I feel its the best showcase of his career. There are contemplative gems (“Fred Jones Part 2”, “Still Fighting It”), break up anthems (“Gone”), and rollicking odes (“Zak And Sara”, “Losing Lisa”) abound, all of them containing the kind of introspection through someone else’s eyes that Folds lyrics are known for.
The album’s title track is a hard rocking in depth look at the culture surrounding the music industry at the time it was written, and its message has not lost any significance in the years passed. On the track, Folds calls out all musicians who don’t have the chops to back their success, but he has fun while doing it. He’s not whining or comparing his success to theirs, but he does make a bold statement about how a lot of chart toppers attract their audience.
“The Luckiest” closes the album and is one of the most gorgeous love songs I have ever heard. It’s lyrics may not take the most traditional approach to the genre, but its open sincerity is equaled only by its melodic beauty. This track alone is worth your time let alone your dollar, but combined with all the other tracks I’ve listed, you’re already saving money by purchasing the album as a whole. Rockin’ The Suburbs contains a solid twelve tracks, making it a steal at $5 and a must-add to your collection.
The deal disappears come November 1, 2011, so be sure to grab this album on sale while you can.
