Over the past few years, while they haven’t come into the fold in the numbers one would truly like to see (I could probably count the amount of films directed by them in 2011 on two hands) female filmmakers have not only begun to earn more respect in the film world, but hell, they’ve even won Oscars.
And sure, she may not be a director as deft as someone like Kathryn Bigelow, but one of the more interesting female filmmakers around is one Karyn Kusama. A filmmaker with a distinct visual eye, Kusama is best known for the underrated horror oddity Jennifer’s Body and her first film, the shockingly good Girlfight (and no, I won’t be mentioning a certain Charlize Theron picture she also helmed). Now however, we know who will be leading the way for her next one, The Rut.
Alongside Kick-Ass and Let Me In star Chloe Moretz, THR is reporting that Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, The Losers) has joined the cast of the film, which follows “a young girl (Moretz) who, in order to win the approval of her father (Morgan), surrounds herself with danger and adventure as she journeys into the wilderness alone to hunt deer.” Think Hanna, but with deer instead of Cate Blanchett.
Personally, as a fan of Kusama, I really think this could be her breakout film. I enjoyed Jennifer’s Body for what it was, and found her work with writer Diablo Cody to be quite fun. Hopefully this can follow in that film’s footsteps.
