The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as adapted by Eric Powell is more than just a newly illustrated accompaniment to Mark Twain‘s classic novel. Recently, new editions of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn have been released replacing the controversial language of the 19th century original. However, publisher IDW and artist Eric Powell made the conscious decision to release this adaptation as it was initially published. This illustrated version represents an independent publisher rejecting the idea of censoring an American classic. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn illustrated by Eric Powell is a wonderful way to revisit this piece of classic American literature.

Eric Powell has an incredible ability to illustrate with both an eye for detail and a keen understanding of atmosphere. Powell is able to capture the vast landscapes that Twain described so many years ago in beautiful detail. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn illustrated by Eric Powell is not focused on illustrating its characters in new ways. The illustrations deal more with the landscape and the feeling of the south. Powell spent most of his life in the south, so he has a vivid knowledge of the land. Right from the start, it’s obvious that Powell had a specific vision for this project. Powell uses a looser style in both pencils and ink to convey a rough sketchy look. This style of art fits perfectly for this book and it’s themes. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is both a satire and a social commentary about life in the south. Eric Powell acknowledges the combined themes of this book in his artwork and creates a rich illustrated companion to this novel.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn illustrated by Eric Powell is a great way to read Mark Twain’s classic. In its original form with full-page art from Powell this rerelease from IDW does the novel justice. There are no deviations from the original story, it is simply as it was meant to be. The additional illustrations just give readers another reason to enjoy this American classic again. Incredible both visually and intellectually, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn illustrated by Eric Powell is a must for new readers and Twain junkies alike.
