New Oni Press Logo

Independent comic book publishing company Oni Press is following suit in this season’s redesigns when they unveiled a brand new logo on Thursday that will soon be on all upcoming releases.

For the first time since the company’s first appearance on the comic book scene in 1997, Oni Press has announced that it’s time for a change. The company has evolved, and they’re simply not the same company that they were when they debuted. And I have to agree.

The new logo debuts on the March 14 release of Brian Churilla’s The Secret History of D.B. Cooper #1 and will be featured on all subsequent releases from the publishing company including some of the Oni’s consistently amazing comics like The Sixth Gun and Wasteland. With the company’s continuous growth with properties like Bryan Lee O’Malley’s six-volume epic Scott Pilgrim, it makes sense that they would want to move on to something a little more marketable than the face of a Japanese demon, which is exactly what the current logo is. Sure, that may be what Oni technically means, but a demon face is probably not exactly something that’s simple and marketable to all demographics. Now, that’s just my personal interpretation of the change, but it makes sense to me.

The new logo is a nice change that also pays tribute to what came before it. It features a ghastly half face in the top corner of a squared word balloon with the phrase “RevolutiONIze Comics” and the company’s web address. It’s nice and streamlined, and while it reminds me a little of the logo for the now defunct Zuda Comics, it stands out against all other publishing companies.

This is a good move for Oni Press, and hopefully it’s a sign of great things to come from the independent publishing company.

For more information about the change and what it looks like on comics, head over to Oni Press’ official site.
