Icon, the creator-owned subsidiary of publisher Marvel Comics, has possibly one of the best stables of creators and comic book titles in their arsenal, and care of Comixology, you can catch up on titles like Criminal, Powers, Casanova, and more with a cool 20 percent off sale.
Yes, that’s right! You’ve seen the praise for Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ creator-owned work on this site before, and that’s with good reason, as Criminal and Incognito are two of the most innovative works in their fields. Both comics completely suck you in to their gritty, crime-ridden world setting and tell a story that is simply unforgettable. I even suggested that you catch up on Criminal on this past week’s GoD List, so if you for some reason weren’t listening to me, here’s your perfect opportunity. There’s not a single issue of Criminal or Incognito for over the price of $1.50. What are you waiting for?
Well, you might be waiting for this, because Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Icon work isn’t the only thing that’s on sale here. Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming‘s Powers (it appears to be the entire series) is also available for a hugely discounted price. If you’re not aware of Powers because you’ve been living under a rock, or you just couldn’t be bother for whatever reason (I can dig it), let me explain what Powers is. Powers is comic about a set of detectives that work is superhero crime. Yes, police dealing with the deaths of super-powered individuals, super-powered criminals, and more are featured in this comic, but it doesn’t come off as a Gotham Central clone or anything like that; in fact, the tone of the book, while dealing with crime, is much more poppy and fun regardless of the material. And therein lies the brilliance of how the comic comes off. It’s an extremely well developed world, and should be experienced by as many people as possible, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, or if maybe you just started with the renumbering of the series (shame on me), you pick up these digital comics for a great price. And if you like Bendis, his other creator-owned books Scarlett, Takio, Fortune and Glory, Brilliant, and Jinx are all on sale, as well.
But don’t think that’s all either, because Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá‘s Casanova is also on sale. And out of all of these comics on sale, I’d have to suggest that you pick this up. Casanova is the reason people love Matt Fraction. It’s a psychedelic tale about a secret agent/spy that takes place in a multi-verse. It’s full of twists and turns and above all else, it’s just plainly and simply cool. It’s a must read for anyone that’s maybe tired of the same old same old. While other Icon titles focus on crime or renditions of super powers, Casanova stands on its own as being a comic that no one else could even try to imagine. The closest writing style that I could associate to Fraction’s Casanova is Grant Morrison in his prime (The Invisibles, Doom Patrol), and Morrison never worked with an artist like Bá. You’ve got to at least try this comic, and for only $1.50 an issue, how could you say no?
All in all, Icon has some of the best creator owned works, and Comixology is honoring that with a weekend sale that ends at 11 PM EST on February 20 that includes all of these comics as well as Kick-Ass, so head over to Comixology right now and pick up some truly amazing books that you’re pretty much guaranteed to love. Also, it goes to the creators! Get your priorities straight, mister or missus.
