Free First-Person Shooter MMO ‘DUST 514’ Coming To PlayStation; Is This The Future Of Gaming?

DUST 514

In what could be a major achievement in video games and their future, a new game titled DUST 514 from CCP Games is looking to do something no one else has succeeded in doing yet: to offer a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter gaming experience, and to not charge you a single penny to play it.

When it’s released, the game will be available to all PlayStation 3 owners through the PlayStation Network for no cost whatsoever.

Anyone who’s played (and continued to pay for) one of the top MMOs, such as World of Warcraft or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, knows just how absurd this sounds, and the exciting part will be seeing whether it becomes what’s being promised of it or if it will underperform in the end.

And what is being promised so far, exactly? Well, DUST 514 is said to be a team-based combat game set in what’s called the EVE Universe, which contains thousands of planets to explore. Also in the game, ground-based mercenary teams will work closely with the starship pilots of EVE Online—CCP’s existing space-based game named best MMO by PC Games in 2009—in hopes of waging and winning battles, acquiring territories, getting rich, and building their very own empires.

Of the game, CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson says:

“DUST 514 has everything you could want in a shooter: thrilling gameplay, spectacular graphics and an incredible strategic depth that comes from sharing the living universe of EVE Online.

DUST 514 embodies the passion and creativity the world has come to expect from CCP, and we think PlayStation®3 owners will be amazed at the opportunity to play such a groundbreaking new game of this caliber for free.”

For a better description of the game, here’s the official description:

DUST 514 is an MMOFPS from CCP Games set in a massive persistent universe and available exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 3. Bridging the PC and console platforms, DUST 514 delivers an immersive experience of brutal ground combat and strategic planetary conquest set in the thriving universe of CCP’s science-fiction MMO for PC and Mac, EVE Online.

In DUST 514, mercenaries on the ground wage war to acquire territory, resources and notoriety, forging and breaking agreements with the starship pilots of EVE Online as they work together in real-time to control vast regions of deep space. Players in EVE Online and DUST 514 share a realistic, player-driven economy. Every action in DUST 514 has real consequences that ripple across a persistent universe spanning thousands of star systems. In DUST 514, unlike in any other game, your actions can truly topple empires.

You can learn more about DUST 514 and EVE Online at their official sites.

Also, if this does ends up being as good as it sounds like it might be, could it lure Xbox users from their pricey Xbox Live Gold subscriptions to not only this free game, but the option of playing most popular multiplayer games for free on the PS3 system? Or will this go unnoticed by Microsoft’s faithfuls?

What do you think of DUST 514? Will you give it a chance, or do you have no interest?

  1. I was previously on the fence about buying Dust 514.  Now it’s no longer even a question!

  2. At least with dust514 you won’t have to sit on a gate or tower grind for hours.
