Free-to-play games are getting bigger and bigger each day (something game studios who make big money from you dropping $60 on a game surely despise), but most of the ones we’ve seen are expectedly poor in quality.
At this year’s E3 convention, however, a couple of upcoming free-to-play games titled DUST 514 and Hawken were shown off, and they could just be worth keeping an eye on.
Keep reading to find out more about them and to see gameplay videos for both.
DUST 514 is one we told you about here at Geeks of Doom a few months back, and it sounds far too ambitious to work. Still, here it is. Making it’s way to us.
The game is not just a regular game, but a giant MMO where you’ll be able to play with thousands of others in this world. It’s also a first-person shooter, which is also impressive as most MMOs are of the third-person variety. It’s set in the same world as the popular EVE Online—a space-based starship pilot combat MMO—and players will be able to interact with EVE Online players to do certain things.
DUST 514 will be free to all PlayStation 3 owners, and the open beta begins sometime later this year. You can learn more about it at the game’s official website.
Next up is Hawken, a first-person mech combat multiplayer game. Unfortunately the game is currently only coming to PC—bad news for you Xbox 360 owners who won’t be able to try either of these two games—but hopefully it’ll branch out to other platforms later on because it looks insanely fun. You can also head to its official site for more information.
Do you have any interest in free-to-play games such as this? Or are you happy with the games you pay for?

Planetside 2 is another really nice looking MMOFPS to look out for. Beta is coming soon.
