For anyone who might have missed it, during E3 2019 a couple of weeks back Xbox’s Matt Booty announced that Double Fine Productions would be joining Xbox Game Studios. You may know Double Fine for games such as Psychonauts and Brütal Legend.
Their acclaimed founder Tim Schafer, who is known for his work on Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, and Monkey Island (to name a few titles), joined Matt on stage to share a new gameplay trailer for Psychonauts 2. You can check out the gameplay trailer below.
Psychonauts is a 2005 title about a boy named Raz, with psychic abilities, who sneaks into a summer camp and uncovers a deep mystery. The game quickly became a fan favorite due to its humor, character development, and extraordinary wit. Psychonauts 2, which was first announced at The Game Awards back in 2015, appears to share the same delightful mechanisms and humor of its predecessor.
In Psychonauts 2, Raz has grown up and is starting his first day at a new job. The trailer depicts the return of many familiar characters and abilities, with a focus on an evolution of the mental gymnastics that were commonplace in the initial title. At the end of the video, we’re teased with the potential of a new sinister villain.
Microsoft has promised that Double Fine will have the same freedom as before to pursue their vision and unique style. Hopefully that remains the case as we wait with anticipation for the sequel to be released.
Psychonauts 2 will be released in 2020 on Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10, and will also be available at launch to anyone with a subscription to Xbox Game Pass.
