Still one of the greatest of the modern Hollywood blockbusters, Steven Spielberg‘s original Jurassic Park is returning to theaters next summer not long after the 20th anniversary of its spectacular theatrical release. This time, however, audiences will have the chance to see the movie in glorious (hopefully) post-converted 3D.
According to producer Kathleen Kennedy, the director and his longtime cinematographer Janusz Kaminski will be personally supervising the 3D conversion and conducting a frame-by-frame evaluation of the film to see that the process is done right. It’s a shame that Dean Cundey, the director of photography on Jurassic Park, won’t be involved in the project but at least the personal involvement of Spielberg and Kaminski (who shot the 1997 Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World) guarantees that this conversion won’t be a sloppy, fly-by-night effort on the part of Universal Pictures to milk the franchise dry.
In an interview with Collider Kennedy expressed her feelings regarding the conversion:
“I’m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmaker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion—it’s not just a technological exercise—then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture…I also think it’s tricky because unless you framed the movie with [3D] in mind, not all those shots—quick cutting, that kind of thing—it’s not necessarily going to translate, and so that’s why you’ve gotta have the DP and you’ve gotta have the director frame-by-frame involved in the process of that conversion.â€
Jurassic Park will the latest blockbuster from my youth to get the 3D conversion, joining the ranks of The Lion King, Star Wars Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, and the upcoming Titanic. Most of the movie’s memorable scenes take place in broad daylight, but the classic T-Rex attack is set entirely in a torrential nighttime downpour. Night scenes are the toughest to credibly convert to 3D, usually causing blurry pictures and inducing headaches in viewers. With Spielberg and Kaminski calling the shots on the conversion efforts at the very least Jurassic Park 3D should look and play a greater deal better than the recent Phantom Menace.
Jurassic Park 3D will be released on July 19, 2013.
