ILM's Star Wars: The Force Awakens VFX

There were lots of practical effects used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as we know. Something we don’t see enough of these days, especially with movies as big as it is, and something that fans appreciated greatly. But there were also many digital effects created for the movie, of course.

Industrial Lights & Magic has released a new video showcasing some of the visual effects they worked on for The Force Awakens. The video runs about four minutes, and includes a bunch of digital effects ILM was responsible for including sets, ships, characters, and more. Mainly, it’s yet another cool look at the crazy stuff that can be accomplished on computers these days.

You can check out the video below.

Warcraft Movie Legendary Pictures

Warcraft is the big budget blockbuster video game adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft. The popular title has a huge built-in fanbase, and has been played by millions of people around the world. Now the gaming company, along with Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures, will be releasing the film this summer. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film sees the Orcs escaping their decaying home world through a mystical portal, and attempting to colonize peaceful realm of Azeroth which is ruled by humans.

We were recently invited to the press conference on the film’s press day where we sat with a group of our fellow journalists to talk to Jones, and cast Travis Fimmel, Toby Kebbell, Paula Patton, and Ben Schnetzer. There they talked about giving the fantasy genre a new voice, playing their respective roles, the visual effects, and much more.

Check out our top seven things we learned from the Warcraft press conference below.

Jurassic Park

Still one of the greatest of the modern Hollywood blockbusters, Steven Spielberg‘s original Jurassic Park is returning to theaters next summer not long after the 20th anniversary of its spectacular theatrical release. This time, however, audiences will have the chance to see the movie in glorious (hopefully) post-converted 3D.

According to producer Kathleen Kennedy, the director and his longtime cinematographer Janusz Kaminski will be personally supervising the 3D conversion and conducting a frame-by-frame evaluation of the film to see that the process is done right. It’s a shame that Dean Cundey, the director of photography on Jurassic Park, won’t be involved in the project but at least the personal involvement of Spielberg and Kaminski (who shot the 1997 Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World) guarantees that this conversion won’t be a sloppy, fly-by-night effort on the part of Universal Pictures to milk the franchise dry.

Star Wars 3DLucasfilm has announced that the first Star Wars 3D release, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, will hit theaters on February 10, 2012.

As outlined in the initial announcement on the Star Wars 3D releases, the plan is to re-release each Star Wars film newly converted to 3D every year, finishing in 2017.
