There were lots of practical effects used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as we know. Something we don’t see enough of these days, especially with movies as big as it is, and something that fans appreciated greatly. But there were also many digital effects created for the movie, of course.
Industrial Lights & Magic has released a new video showcasing some of the visual effects they worked on for The Force Awakens. The video runs about four minutes, and includes a bunch of digital effects ILM was responsible for including sets, ships, characters, and more. Mainly, it’s yet another cool look at the crazy stuff that can be accomplished on computers these days.
You can check out the video below.
I love practical effects just as much as the next person, but it’s always fascinating to me to see how just how much stuff is digitally created or altered using these types of effects.
We’ve also seen cool examples from TV shows like Game of Thrones (watch here, here, and here) and The Walking Dead (watch here), and even movies you would never ever expect to see a bunch of digital effects used such as Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street (watch here).

We are pleased to share a sample of the visual effects work created for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The history of ILM leads all the way back to 1975 and origins of Star Wars and The Force Awakens gave us the opportunity to once again push the boundaries of what is possible in character animation and visual effects while combining cutting edge practical effects and physical sets. ILM studios in San Francisco, Singapore, Vancouver and London each contributed to the film effects as did our partners Hybride, Base FX and Virtuos.
