John Lennon Sculpture Erected During Imagine Tribute At The Olympics Closing Ceremony

Today was the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, which saw performances by legendary British bands like Queen and The Who, as well as musical tributes to artists David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the late John Lennon.

A remastered version of the iconic video for the song “Imagine” was shown during the tribute to the former Beatle, while performers sang (and signed) along, while others erected a sculpture of John Lennon’s face, including his trademark glasses.

Above and below are photos from the John Lennon tribute (courtesy of my television and iPhone camera).

The closing ceremony also saw performances from George Michael, Queen, The Who, Madness, Annie Lennox, and a reunion of The Spice Girls. The tributes, along with the one to Lennon, included those to David Bowie, which contained a nod to fashion; Pink Floyd, with original drummer Nick Mason performing “With You Where Here” with Ed Sheeran (beneath a tightrope act); and Russell Brand singing The Beatles’ song “I Am The Walrus.”

Some British humor was infused into the event thanks to Monty Python’s Eric Idle singing Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

At the opening ceremony on July 27, Paul McCartney sang his popular Beatles tune “Hey Jude,” while some antics included Mary Poppins Defeated Lord Voldemort and Queen Elizabeth II & James Bond Parachuted Into The Olympics Opening Ceremony.

  1. Imagine an entire world living in peace… John saw the beauty
and inherent good in humanity. I tried
to do his legacy justice and channel his world-embracing and loving energy this
week with a tribute portrait inspired by his music and his passion for changing
the world. You can see this new work of
art in memoriam on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/12/john-lennon-just-imagine.html
along with some pictures showing how I created it. See John holding the Universe in his hand and
spreading his message. When you stop by,
let me know how his words and music have affected your life and creativity!
