Watching the trailer for Guillermo Del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, one might think there wouldn’t be any need for any explanation or clarification; the trailer pretty much spells it out for you. But when you get the director to provide some commentary on giant robots punching out towering monsters, you might want to take the time to listen.
MTV recently sat down with Del Toro, who provided some commentary on the highly anticipated Pacific Rim. Check it out here below.
While the trailer for Pacific Rim doesn’t need much analyzing, having some of the context explained by the director is fun. It allows us to have a better understanding of the film itself and why the particular scenes were chosen for the trailer.
Anything you see in the commentary trailer below will have spoilers, so turn back if you want to avoid them. Directed by Del Toro, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. Warner Bros. will release the film into theaters on July 12.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
