Some very interesting pieces are being moved into position when it comes to video games being turned into movies. Widely believed to be pointless endeavors, video game movies fail more often than not…and in brutal fashion.

Video game maker Ubisoft is on a mission to change that notion of video game movies.

First we heard that they were turning their Assassin’s Creed franchise into a movie. Then came word of a movie based on the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series. Now comes word of a new movie being developed, this one also based on a Tom Clancy game, Ghost Recon.

To back up their plan to prove that good movies can be made based on popular video games, the company created Ubisoft Motion Pictures, hired Jean-Julien Baronnet to run it, and has had some deals fall through with places like Paramount and Sony due to their need for some creative control and financial participation.

Baronnet formerly ran Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, and has been very closely involved in everything from casting to screenwriting and other filmmaking decisions. This has proven to be a very smart move with word that Michael Fassbender will play the lead in Assassin’s Creed, and Tom Hardy will take on the lead role in the Splinter Cell movie.

The Ghost Recon games are described as military tactical shooters, and it’s unclear whether or not one of the game’s storylines will be used, or if a completely new one will be written. It’s also not yet known who they might get to star, but, given the patterns we’ve seen, we’ll likely hear of a significant name attached soon.

Which of the Ubisoft games are you most looking forward to seeing as a movie?

  1. I’d have to say that Assassin’s Creed peeks my interest the most.
