After helming the underrated sci-fi drama Moon and the equally exciting Source Code, Duncan Jones is going to take on a tentpole film, a first in his directing career. THR reports that Jones has signed on to direct Warcraft, based on the popular Blizzard MMORPG game World of Warcraft.
The project will be under the Legendary Pictures banner, with Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni producing. Also producing are Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner.
The World of Warcraft game has taken many different genre directions during its run, but never lost sight of the fact that it was a multiplayer online role-playing game. What started out as a simple medieval game that involved wizards, knights, dragons, and other demons has evolved into spaceships, aliens, and other sci-fi aspects. Of course this all depends on what kind of game you are playing. Starcraft immediately comes to mind.
But no matter what game you are playing there is a sense of excitement in the air because Blood Diamond scribe Charles Leavitt has been tapped to write the screenplay for the live-action adaptation. Of course Legendary will keep the script close at hand and away from any prying eyes. And just to be sure Warcraft doesn’t lose its way, Blizzard Entertainment’s Chris Metzen will act as executive producer for the film.
Legendary expects to release Warcraft sometime in 2015.
What are your thoughts on Duncan Jones directing the World of Warcraft? If Warcraft does well at the box office, do you expect to see a sequel or a StarCraft movie?
