Red 5 Comics and digital comic shop Comixology have teamed up to bring attendees of the Emerald City Comi-Con the world’s first digital convention exclusive comic, Atomic Robo: Along Came a Tyrantula.

The comic will be available to attendees of the Seattle convention thanks to a special code on the back of their badges and will allow readers to experience the story across Comixology’s many platforms on iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle, Windows 8 devices, and over the internet. If you’re not able to attend the convention, never fear; the issue will go on sale March 8th to the general public.

Atomic Robo creators Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener had this to say about the story:

This is not a paper comic adapted to digital. It was a from-scratch ground-up experiment with the boundaries of the comic reading experience. Without the tools that comiXology’s Guided View provides, it would not have been possible. We can’t wait to hear the reaction from the Emerald City Comicon debut. Atomic Robo is an action scientist, and it was great to have the chance to more deeply explore his action side for this comic.

As digital comics become a bigger part of the comics industry, we can expect to see more exclusives such as this. The 2013 con season is just starting, so it will be fun to see what companies do to get as many people excited about their comics as possible.

From the preview of the comic that I saw, it looks to be taking many of the things Marvel and other companies have done with their Infinite comics and brought it into the world of comics. This is not just breaking up the normal page into panel size chunks; this is a new way for artists to present their stories. It is something that I find very exciting and can’t wait to see more of.
