We found out earlier this month that Justin Lin would not be returning to direct another movie in the Fast and Furious franchise after running things for the last four installments, including the upcoming Fast & Furious 6.
Now comes word that James Wan has been chosen to step in for the departing Lin and take the helm for Fast and Furious 7. The choice is an interesting one, to say the least, as Wan is known primarily for his work in the horror genre. His credits include the original Saw, the surprise hit Insidious (as well as its upcoming sequel), and this summer’s The Conjuring.
Of the announcement, Lin had this to say:
“I’m extremely proud to be part of the Fast franchise, it is an experience I will always treasure. It’s time for me to move on to other things and I’m thrilled that Universal and Neal [Moritz] have selected James Wan to lead the franchise into its new chapter.”
Details on the movie are not yet known, and the only stars who are confirmed for Fast and Furious 7 are Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. The status of other stars, such as Dwayne Johnson and Tyrese, is unknown.
