The cast of James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy is just out of this world, and it was long suspected that the group would join forces with The Avengers to fend off the Thanos threat in The Avengers 2. But with filming expected to begin this month, and two more roles to fill, we won’t be seeing what Guardians of the Galaxy for quite a while.
Despite what we may think is going to happen, The Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon made it clear that there will be no such team up happening any time soon, no matter how awesome it looks in our heads.
While promoting Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon said:
“We’re following Guardians at Shepperton [Studios, with Avengers 2] but we won’t be swapping cast members. Every movie is its own thing and has to be. Unless I take a lot of peyote and write a very different draft”¦ and I’m not ruling that out.”
At first Whedon says that he won’t be “swapping cast members,” that every movie has to be its own thing, and to change all that means that he would have to write a very different draft. That’s a lot to do, especially if Whedon is targeting an early 2014 start date for The Avengers 2. But then he finishes his statement with “I’m not ruling that out.”
As far as we know, all of The Avengers will come back, and they will be joined by Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch. However, add the five members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and you got yourself quite a dilemma in terms of who gets ample screen time and who doesn’t. Which is why it makes sense that Whedon suggests that this Guardians won’t appear in The Avengers 2.
