It’s preview night here at San Diego Comic-Con and there are already tons of events happening all over town. One event we just got to experience is a special exhibit showing off the Legendary Pictures reboot of the Godzilla franchise, to be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters). Fans at the convention can go to the Legendary booth for a chance to get tickets to go inside this special event, titled Godzilla Encounter.
We have 72 photos here below from the Godzilla Encounter for you to check out!
Once inside the building, fans are able to walk around a typical Japanese street dedicated to all things Godzilla, complete with overturned cop cars, displays of all kinds of memorabilia including a giant typhoon made out of over 200 comics, and a working Ramen and Sushi Bar with items on the menu such as as the King Ghidorah Dragon Roll, Zilla Energy Tea, and Mecharamen.
From there, attendees are taken into a special disaster room, until they’re moved to another room where they come face to face with the giant monster. The footage shown in this room was done just for this special event and won’t be in the movie, but from what I saw, the new monster is very much in line with the classic look of the monster, just given a bit of a CGI facelift. But the sound? Oh my goodness, the classic Godzilla scream is in full effect.
We also received some promo versions of this poster.
The creator of the installation said it took about three months to design and about a week to put together on site, and it is really something to behold. The whole event is a love letter to the series as a whole, and it makes it seem like the crew behind the new movie have a real passion for what makes the property work. Most of the signs in the street area seem to mention “The People’s Monster” or “The Savior of Mankind,” so it will be interesting to see what angle they are taking with the monster’s personality in this one, but we’ll just have to wait to find out when we get new footage this weekend at the convention.
