BBC Sherlock Benedict Cumberbatch Martin Freeman

Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has been working hard over in New Zealand over the last few weeks finishing up on the filming of his most recent Tolkien trilogy, The Hobbit. The director has posted photos to his Facebook page of the final days on The Hobbit set, including one of star Martin Freeman‘s last day on July 12 (here below), and then the final shot done on July 26, 2013.

One of the last pictures of the filming that Jackson posted on Facebook was taken two weeks ago of Sherlock stars Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch together on set. Freeman has the lead role in the film trilogy as the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, while Cumberbatch is voicing the dragon Smaug, who is the center of attention in the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, due out in theaters on December 13, 2013. In the photo, shown here below, which Jackson titled “Smaug admires Bilbo’s feet,” Cumberbatch is touching Freeman’s prosthetic Hobbit feet. Check out the photo here below.

It’s great to see the duo, who are just awesome on Sherlock, together again and I’m looking forward to experiencing their riddle-filled banter when their characters finally meet on screen. I’m wondering if we’ll actually see Cumberbatch — who along with voicing Smaug is also doing the motion-capture performance and voice for the Necromancer — in a live-action setting in the remaining Hobbit films. There’s something about how Cumberbatch looks in this photo that makes me think we might just get a glimpse of him somewhere. I’m hoping that since he was on set in New Zealand, that Jackson found a way to put him on screen in some capacity, perhaps in the background somewhere in an uncredited role. I’m thinking something similar to how actor Jeremy Bulloch, who was covered up as Boba Fett in the Empire Strikes Back, was also given a small role as Lieutenant Sheckil, the Imperial guard on Cloud City who holds Princess Leia back when she’s yelling to warn Luke Skywalker that he’s walking into a trap.

Jackson also wrote a scene for Andy Serkis, who was doing the mocap and voice for the creature Gollum, in the final Lord of the Rings movie where we got to see the actor look more like himself playing a pre-Gollum Smeagol on screen. I know, wishful thinking on my part, but you never know. Either way, I’m excited to at least hear Cumberbatch in the next movie.
